By sticking to the emotional core of what she had to say, Kathleen McCleary wrote a first novel that caught the interest of not one but nine agents. She has since published that novel, House and Home, as well as two others, A Simple Thing and Leaving Haven.
I wrote my first novel because I had to. I had two school-age kids and was working as a freelance journalist and juggling all the usual family/work/community commitments. But I had a story I felt so strongly about—about a woman who loved her house so much that she couldn’t give it up—that I couldn’t not write it. I wrote my story for myself, to help me process a recent move and my feelings about it, and to see if I could. I wrote early in the morning and late at night. I took an online novel-writing class, and when it ended, I took it again because it gave me weekly deadlines (if I could finish a few pages or a chapter, the instructor and class would critique it) and someone to discuss my story with. And the emotional truth that drove me to write the novel in the first place and then to keep writing showed through in the finished product. When I sent it out, nine agents asked to read the full thing, and I had offers from more than half to represent me. Finding that emotional truth is the heart of every book I write.
